href=\"\/en\/software-solutions\/3d-cad\/\">CAD<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/3d-printing-solutions\/\">3D printing<\/a>. This 3D printing repair case shows just how that was done. It starts with a budget water rower exercise machine that had arm failures in the resistance paddle which spins inside the water tank. In hindsight, it could have been predicted by using <a href=\"\/en\/software-solutions\/3d-cad\/\">SOLIDWORKS<\/a> Flow, Plastics, or Simulation software. However, that discussion will be saved for another article.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This type of failure makes the component an excellent candidate for 3D printing repair. Rather than simply reproducing the original part, engineers can redesign the weak geometry to create a stronger, more durable replacement.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Redesigning the Paddle for Improved Performance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For the moment, we will focus on designing and producing a <a href=\"\/en\/3d-printing-solutions\/\">3D printed<\/a> replacement paddle. The new design is inspired by the paddle used in commercial-grade water rowers found in health clubs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9840 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture2-769x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture2-769x1024.jpg 769w, https:\/\/solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture2-768x1023.jpg 768w, https:\/\/solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture2-600x799.jpg 600w, https:\/\/solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture2.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To improve the design, the commercial grade water rower has single mixing paddle design that extends across the diameter of the tank. In addition, there are openings between the shaft hub and the scoop ends, but the paddle has solid plastic arms at the top and bottom of the water tank. The budget rower was connected only at the bottom of the water tank leading to increasing offset dynamic loads as athlete exertion increases.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Optimizing the Design for 3D Printing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Although the original design paddle diameter of 18 inches is larger than many <a href=\"\/en\/3d-printing-solutions\/\">3D printer<\/a> print volume dimensions, it was possible to get 16 inches diagonally across the build plate. To compensate for the reduced print size, the width of the working portion of the paddle was adjusted, and the solid section was moved to the top. As a result, the 3D printed design maintained a water-displacing surface area similar to that of the original injection-molded paddle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9842 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture3-768x531-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture3-768x531-1.png 768w, https:\/\/solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture3-768x531-1-300x207.png 300w, https:\/\/solidxperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Picture3-768x531-1-600x415.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, by using a pattern of triangle and diamond shapes for the open section, the replacement paddle can be printed without support. Chamfers are used for edge breaks around the edges and openings for better flow characteristics while still being easy to print.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the original paddle had a pressed and brazed connection between the paddle and rower shaft.\u00a0 This was replaced with a pentagon shaped hole to allow for screw fastening to the shaft.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Choosing the Right Material for 3D Printing Repair<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To maximize durability,\u00a0 <a href=\"\/en\/product\/markforged-onyx-one\/\">Markforged Onyx<\/a> filament is used which is a carbon and nylon blend.
