Before getting started we recommend you create a 3D Experience ID. This is quick and free and will allow you not only to access the Solidworks Downloads page but also all the content featured on SOLIDWORKS. To get started head to the following link to create your ID: 3DX ID Creation
Once you have done that the next step is to go and get the Solidworks installation files from the downloads page linked here, SOLIDWORKS Design Downloads. Use your freshly created 3D experience ID or an existing one if you have it.
From here just follow the steps in our guide to help you through the rest of the process to have you in Solidworks and designing in no time.
5 Key Tips for Setting Up SOLIDWORKS the Right Way
-
Install with administrator rights: Sign in as a local administrator, close unnecessary programs, and temporarily pause antivirus or security tools if they interfere with the installation.
-
Choose the correct install location: The default program location is usually fine, but confirm there is enough free space on the drive. Avoid installing SOLIDWORKS program files in custom folders unless your company has a specific standard.
-
Decide where SOLIDWORKS Toolbox will live: For a standalone installation, Toolbox is often stored locally, such as in
C:\SOLIDWORKS Data. Do not place Toolbox in a temporary folder. If you work with a team, confirm whether Toolbox should be shared or managed through PDM before installing. -
Plan template locations: Decide where part, assembly, and drawing templates will be stored. Common locations include a company standards folder, a local CAD standards folder, or a PDM vault. After installation, confirm these paths under Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations.
-
Select only the products you need: During installation, review add-ins and products such as Simulation, Visualize, Electrical, CAM, or PDM. Installing unnecessary products can take extra space and complicate setup.
